The Future Of Cardiac Surgery
Dr. M. Kerem VURALa
aKalp ve Damar Cerrahisi Kliniği, Türkiye Yüksek İhtisas Eğitim ve Araştırma Hastanesi, ANKARA The introduction of the cardiopulmonary bypass pump into clinical practice by John F. Gibbon during 1950s was one of the key elements in establishing today’s modern cardiac surgery. The modern cardiac surgery was based on technological innovation but today’s technological innovations, especially in interventional cardiology, are narrowing the field of cardiac surgery. Cardiac surgery’s standard approaches will certainly be performed with effectiveness in treating cardiovascular disease in the future, but perhaps they will be performed somehow less frequently than they are today. To keep their positions as the practitioners of an effective and dominant treatment modality, cardiac surgeons should refine their standard methods, establish new treatment approaches, adopt interventional cardiovascular techniques and go into new fields such as circulatory support systems. It may also be necessary to go beyond the conventional training policies and adopt multidisciplinary educational programs, to train experts in such areas. In addition to this, the cardiac surgeons should become once again, an integral part of the decision making process involving financial and medico-legal issues. The sectoral powers deciding how the industry and resources will be used in the treatment of cardiovascular diseases, will greatly shape the future of cardiac surgery. Keywords: Cardiac surgical procedures, transplantation, heart-lung machine cloning, genetics, tissue engineering, genetic engineering, xenograft, stem cell, prosthetic heart valveTurkiye Klinikleri J Cardiovasc Sci 2007, 19:174-182
